Jute, Bangladesh's golden fibre, and the gap in finished goods
Short answer: Jute and jute goods earned Bangladesh about $884 million in the year to June 2026, up 7.75%. But most of it left as yarn, sacks and raw fibre: finished products such as tote bags, rugs and decor earned only $74.4 million, down 11.28%. That leaves room for custom-branded jute products, but the finished-goods trade is small and EU demand is weak.

The trade-off: Bangladesh grows its own jute and finished jute goods are a real gap, but that trade is small, shrinking and spread across small workshops, EU orders have fallen, and the 500-piece minimum for custom totes comes from a general guide, not a checked Bangladeshi quote.
Still pending
- The 500-piece minimum for custom-printed jute bags comes from a general B2B guide; a Bangladeshi factory minimum and price had not been confirmed as of 14 October 2026.
- FY2026-27 jute figures are incomplete: July-August 2026 exports were $162.5 million, up 37%, which exporters linked to higher raw jute prices rather than higher volume.
- Bangladesh's graduation from the UN Least Developed Country list is scheduled for 24 November 2026; its request to delay graduation to 2029 had no published UN decision as of 14 October 2026.
Jute is a plant fibre that Bangladesh calls its “golden fibre”. Garment factories rely on imported fabric and yarn, mainly from China and India, but jute is grown and processed at home. Before the garment boom it was the country’s main export: garments made up just 0.5% of exports in 1980/81.
How much does Bangladesh earn from jute?
Bangladesh’s financial year runs from July to June. In FY2025-26 (July 2025 to June 2026), jute and jute goods earned $883.69 million, up 7.75%. That sounds healthy. The split tells a different story:
| Jute category, FY2025-26 | Earnings | Change on the year before |
|---|---|---|
| Jute yarn | $545.8 million | +18.18% |
| Sacks and bags | $132.3 million | +5.03% |
| Raw jute | $131.2 million | −11.64% |
| Diversified jute products | $74.4 million | −11.28% |
“Diversified jute products” are finished goods such as tote bags, rugs and home decor. “Sacks and bags” is a separate category, so it is not part of the $74.4 million.
Most jute still leaves Bangladesh as fibre, yarn and sacks. The main buyers, including Turkey, China, India and Egypt, buy mostly yarn and raw jute for their own industries, not consumer products. Over the longer term, jute earnings fell about 29% over five years, and FY2024-25 was a 12-year low at $820.8 million.
Why do so few finished jute products leave Bangladesh?
The government lists 282 items as diversified jute products, from bags to decor. But they are made by roughly 700 to 1,000 small entrepreneurs, depending on the account, many with little access to finance and technology. The government’s jute diversification centre, the JDPC, has no legal foundation or budget.
Finding these makers from abroad is also hard. They show up mainly in B2B directory listings, often dated or incomplete. In the research we rely on, the weak points are design, finishing consistency and finance, not cost.
Where is the opening for brands?
The gap between $545.8 million of yarn and $74.4 million of finished goods is the opportunity. The clearest fit is custom-branded jute bags for retailers, cafés, event organisers and companies that want to replace plastic. Jute goods makers point to European rules on single-use plastics as a driver of demand.
Two practical points:
- Minimum orders. The minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest order a maker will accept. A general B2B guide says custom-printed jute bags typically need 500 or more units. That guide is not specific to Bangladesh, and as of 14 October 2026 we had not confirmed a Bangladeshi factory’s minimum or price. Ask each maker in writing.
- Duty. Bangladesh is on the UN list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), so almost all its goods enter the UK, the EU, Canada and Australia duty-free. The UK, for example, lets 99.8% of Bangladesh’s goods in tariff-free. Bangladesh is scheduled to leave that list, a step called LDC graduation, on 24 November 2026. As of 14 October 2026, no decision on its request to delay had been published. The EU keeps duty-free access to at least the end of 2029 either way. Our guide on why a T-shirt from Bangladesh costs about $2 sets out the duty timeline by market.
What are the catches?
- A shrinking finished-goods trade. Diversified products fell 11.28% in FY2025-26, and exporters report that EU orders for them fell 20–25%, amid the Iran war and higher energy costs.
- Rising raw material prices. In July–August 2026, jute exports rose 37% to $162.5 million, but exporters say the gain came from flood-driven rises in raw jute prices, not higher volume. Sacks and bags fell 13% in the same period.
- Uneven finishing. Many makers are small workshops, and the research names finishing consistency as a weak point. Plan for a sample and an inspection before shipment.
- Targets are not demand. The government aims for $2 billion of jute exports within five years, more than double today’s level. Treat it as a goal, not a sign that buyers are coming.
For the wider export picture, see why so much clothing is made in Bangladesh, and before you pay any maker, run the five checks before a deposit.
What this means for your order
If you want custom jute bags, ask several makers for written minimums, prices and lead times, and approve a printed sample before bulk production. Budget for an inspection, because finishing varies between small workshops. Loom & Harvest does factory checks, sample coordination and inspections for fixed fees; you can tell us what you need.
Common questions
What is the minimum order for custom jute bags from Bangladesh?
A general B2B guide puts custom-printed jute bags at 500 or more units, but it is not specific to Bangladesh. We had not confirmed a Bangladeshi factory's minimum as of 14 October 2026, so ask each maker in writing.
Are jute bags from Bangladesh duty-free?
Today almost all Bangladeshi goods enter the UK, the EU, Canada and Australia duty-free because Bangladesh is a Least Developed Country. The EU keeps this to at least the end of 2029; check the current rules for your market before you order.
Why does Bangladesh export so few finished jute products?
Finished jute goods are made by many small entrepreneurs with limited finance and technology, and the government's diversification centre has no legal foundation or budget. Most jute still leaves as yarn, sacks and raw fibre.
Is demand for jute products growing?
Not for finished goods right now. Diversified jute products fell 11.28% in FY2025-26 and exporters report EU orders down 20-25%, even though total jute earnings rose.
